Dean is a Delivery Office Manager for Royal Mail. After a few years in the courier industry, he made the move to Royal Mail, where he stayed for 15 years.
During this time, he decided to take his career to the next level by enrolling on the Supply Chain Degree Apprenticeship.
Dean said: “When I look back on my school days, I remember enjoying the experience, even though I sometimes got bored and didn’t always push myself to reach my full potential. I ended up with a mix of grades – mostly C’s and a few D’s – and I left school without a clear idea of what I wanted to do with my life. Feeling a bit lost, I jumped straight into the workforce, landing my first job with City Link Couriers in their warehouse, where I sorted parcels and served customers.
One of the key areas where the apprenticeship made a difference was in project management. I learned how to use tools like PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act), Fishbone Diagrams, and SWOT analysis to implement projects effectively in the workplace. These tools were invaluable in helping me drive improvements within the delivery function at Royal Mail. For instance, I led a project to change our methods of working, which significantly improved efficiency. By aligning staff more accurately to the workload and reducing unnecessary movement within the office, we were able to cut down on indoor preparation and sorting time. This allowed us to increase the time spent on outdoor deliveries, ultimately contributing to a higher workload capacity and better service quality.
The apprenticeship didn’t just benefit the business – it also supported my personal development. I’m incredibly proud of what I’ve achieved. The Apprenticeship gave me the tools and knowledge I needed to excel, and it’s something I would highly recommend to anyone interested in advancing their career.”
“The apprenticeship was a game-changer for me. It offered a comprehensive look into the entire supply chain, deepening my understanding and expanding my skill set in ways that directly benefited my role. The knowledge I gained wasn’t just theoretical; I was able to apply it immediately in my day-to-day operations. This had a positive impact on my performance and contributed to the business’s success.”
